Sugar Cookie Frosting

When the holiday season arrives, I go a little nuts with the cookie baking. To be fair, I go a little nuts with the cookie baking all year long anyway, but Christmas time gives me the perfect excuse.

With all the holiday parties, cookie exchanges and family visits, having fresh homemade cookies around is a necessity.

If I have to pick a cookie recipe to bake and share, I’ll often go with sugar cookies for one reason–frosting.

What’s a Christmas sugar cookie without a thick layer of rich creamy frosting on top? This sugar cookie buttercream frosting pairs perfectly with Cut Out Sugar Cookies, a delicious recipe from my friend In Katrina’s Kitchen,as well as my Easy Soft Sugar Cookies.

Best Tasting Sugar Cookie Icing

This frosting recipe hardens slightly as it sets on the cookies. Not only do I love the texture of biting into a big soft sugar cookie with a sugary frosting crust, the hardened icing also stays in place better than other kinds.

That means, you can stack and transport your frosted sugar cookies without worrying about the icing smearing. Not as hard as royal icing, this easy sugar cookie frosting stays in place while keeping the cookie soft and chewy.

Sugar Cookie Buttercream Frosting

It’s undeniable that using butter gives frosting recipes a great flavor. I often use real butter, or a combination of butter and shortening in myButtercream Frosting for cakes and cupcakes.

For this icing recipe I use all shortening instead, for a couple of reasons.

  1. Shortening stays stable at higher temperatures than butter so there’s less risk of your frosting getting melty.
  2. Shortening hardens at room temperature giving the cookies the “crust” I want.

The result will be similar to the frosted sugar cookies you get in the bakery section of the grocery store but with a richer, creamier taste. It’s impossible not to smile when you bite into a cooke decorated with this perfect buttercream frosting!

2. Add two cups of powdered sugar to the shortening and mix until well combined. Add vanilla and salt and mix until combined.

3.Add additional powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing until well combined. When mixture starts to get too thick, start adding milk, a little at a time.

4. Continue to add powdered sugar and milk until completely combined. If you would like your frosting to be thicker, add additional powdered sugar, 1⁄4 cup at a time. If you would like your frosting to be thinner, add additional milk, 1 tbsp at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.

Decorating Cookies

If you’d like to make your frosting different colors, simply divide the icing into separate bowls before adding your desired food coloring. A few drops of red food coloring with green sprinkles and your sugar cookies are ready for Christmas. Try white frosting with pink and red sprinkles for a fun Valentine’s Day sugar cookie.

FAQs

What kind of frosting is on a sugar cookie? ›

Royal icing is a sweet, hard icing made from powdered sugar, egg whites or meringue powder, and flavorings like vanilla or a squeeze of lemon juice. It is used to decorate sugar cookies, gingerbread cookies, or a gingerbread house.

How to make a sugar frosting? ›

Directions. In a small bowl combine powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Stir in additional milk or juice, 1 teaspoon at a time, until it reaches drizzling consistency. Makes 1/2 cup (enough to drizzle over one 10-inch tube cake).

What is the difference between royal icing and sugar cookie icing? ›

Cookie icing can be used in the same way that royal icing can; however, it doesn't dry as hard as royal icing does. It's great for flooding cookies or piping designs into wet icing. To thin the consistency of cookie icing, just pop it in the microwave for about 20 seconds.

Why is my sugar cookie icing not hardening? ›

Undermix, and your royal icing looks translucent and is structurally weak. Overwhip, and you're giving too much volume to the egg proteins via air, causing the structure to weaken in a different way. Overmixed icing usually looks porous when dry, and sometimes will not even fully dry and be soft/brittle.

What is the best type of frosting for cookies? ›

Royal icing is probably the most popular icing that cookie decorators use. It is preferable because it holds up very well if the cookies need to be stacked, shipped, stored, etc.. Royal icing can be made into a very nice glaze and also works great for very fine detail work.

What is the difference between cookie icing and frosting? ›

Frosting is the thickest of these confections and is ideal for spreading or piping on cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Icing is a little thinner than frosting and is often poured or piped over coffee cakes, pound cakes, doughnuts and cookies—and it usually hardens when it dries.

What is sugar frosting made of? ›

Combine powdered sugar and softened butter with an electric mixer. Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Gradually add additional milk, if needed, until you reach a smooth, easy to spread frosting. Once prepared, add food coloring, if desired, stirring the coloring in by spoon.

What is sugar icing called? ›

Glace icing is made by mixing icing sugar with a liquid such as water or fruit juice.

Which icing sugar to use? ›

A: Icing sugar is available as both pure icing sugar and icing sugar mixture. The only difference between the two is that icing sugar mixture has a little cornflour added to prevent it from forming lumps if it gets moist. Generally, if a recipe doesn't stipulate it doesn't really matter which one you use.

Can you use regular frosting for sugar cookies? ›

Yes! You can use any canned frosting, or even make your own (but that's for another time).

Does cookie icing dry hard? ›

Does cookie icing harden? Cookie icing does not harden and will not dry hard like royal icing will. Therefore, we don't suggest using cookie icing for cookies that are going to be stacked or gifted or for assembling gingerbread houses.

What's the easiest way to frost cookies? ›

Use Squeeze Bottles to Decorate Cookies with Icing

Plus, they're easy to clean! My favorites are little eight-ounce squeeze bottles that you can find at Michael's and other craft stores. A small funnel makes it easy to fill them.

How do you dry sugar cookie frosting quickly? ›

Luckily, there are multiple ways that you can speed up the process. Leave your cookies to try at room temperature and expose them to as much airflow as possible. If your home is humid, use a dehumidifier or a fan to help dry the cookies quicker, or use a heat gun to solidify the icing at lightning speed.

How long do sugar cookies need to dry before icing? ›

Follow this tip: Don't rush the cooling process. The first step to making beautifully decorated cookies is making sure the cookies are completely cooled when you begin adding the icing. Play it safe by making it a two-day process: Bake the cookies one day, then decorate the next day.

What is cookie frosting made of? ›

For the icing, you need confectioners' sugar, water, vanilla extract (replace with water to keep the icing stark white, or use clear vanilla extract), a touch of corn syrup, and a little salt. The icing dries firm with a very slight crisp, so you can easily stack your decorated sugar cookies and travel with them.

Is royal icing or buttercream better for sugar cookies? ›

It depends what you're after! If you want artful, elegant cookies, go for royal icing. If you want flavorful, delicious and soft cookies, choose this incredible buttercream sugar cookie icing!

What is the sugary frosting called? ›

A basic icing is called a glacé, containing powdered sugar (also known as icing sugar or confectioners' sugar) and water. This can be flavored and colored as desired, for example, by using lemon juice in place of the water.
