What's going on with TCM? ›

Since the Warner Bros. Discovery merger went into effect in April 2022, TCM has been part of studio-wide cutbacks. It has been subject to rolling layoffs since early last fall, including the highly public loss of TCM Underground programmer Millie De Chirico in Dec.

TCM's Memorial Day Military Movie Marathon begins Saturday, May 25, 2024, at 7:45 a.m. EDT with the 1962 film "Merrill's Marauders." It continues through Tuesday, May 28, concluding with the 1941 classic "Sergeant York."

Movies often air on TCM more than once during the year, and if we have the licensing rights to play the movie on Watch TCM, they will be included again.

For TCM, it has meant a loss of subscribers. The channel was available in 68.2 million homes at the end of 2020, down from 73.3 million in 2019, according to Nielsen. TCM's commercial-free status is a key reason viewers embrace it.

A post on TCM's social media page said: “TCM Movies is closing in the UK and Ireland. On July 6th, we'll be riding off into the sunset one last time. Thank you for joining us on our journey and for loving classic movies just as much as we do.”

After filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson set up a meeting with CEO David Zaslav to express why TCM was so important, they were assured the network was not going anywhere.

Movies like “Gone With the Wind,” “Breakfast at Tiffany's” and John Wayne's “The Searchers” are all-time Hollywood classics and beloved by many. But they also have material touching on their depiction of nonwhite characters that could make audiences cringe, especially in 2021.

The Overacting Sequence

Where is TCM gone? ›

It's bad news for TCM channel fans. Twenty-four years after launching in the UK and Ireland, the channel is saying a big farewell – for good. The channel has shut down in the UK as of Wednesday (July 5), and that includes TCM's +1 channel which will be removed from Sky and Virgin.

Discovery has said its other channel Quest will now air some classic movies in TCM's place, according to Cord Busters. The channel used to air factual shows – but will now also include classic films, from the TCM Movies archives.

The films were programmed by Eric Weber until 2007, when TCM programmer Millie De Chirico took over the role. The block ended on February 24, 2023, following layoffs in December that included De Chirico. The series was launched in an attempt to attract more young viewers to Turner's older-skewing audience.

Officially, nothing has changed about TCM's on-air offering. There are no announced plans to shutter the network or to fire all the on-air hosts who film introductions. And Warner Bros. Discovery execs are still issuing memos saying how important the brand is to the company.

“In an effort to prioritize resources, Turner Classic Movies has made the difficult decision to end the TCM Big Screen Classics series in partnership with Fathom Events,” TCM said in a statement.
